Tooth extraction and healing

I had a tooth extracted recently. The only tooth with a cavity that the dentist had been trying to save for more than 15 years, but the filling kept falling out every few years. Finally she tried an inlay but the tooth started to decay and the inlay fell out as well! It seems as if the tooth was taking time to mature. The healing and insights that have come through at this time, may not have happened if the tooth had been removed any earlier! I tried to work with this whole process quite consciously. I said goodbye to the tooth, I was grateful for how it had been serving me and hoped that I was able to let go of the tooth willingly. I made sure I received a Reiki treatment before the procedure and afterwards.

It was the last upper molar. It came out quite quickly and easily. When the dentist showed me the tooth afterwards, the roots of the tooth caught my attention. It felt as if something had been unplugged from the upper realm. It felt as if this had to happen to strengthen my roots in this realm, on Earth.

On the walk home from the dentist, it seemed as if the numbing of the anaesthetic was helping me remember how emotional numbing can help to avoid feeling pain. Just as the area around my tooth needed to be numbed to avoid feeling the pain of the tooth being released – the emotional numbing seems to have been protecting me from the pain of letting go of some past trauma. If part of me has been numb, I have not been doing something wrong, or not doing something I ought to have been doing. With this came acceptance of this part of me that has been numb, accompanied with a wave of peace.

The next day I realised that the healing I was experiencing was not just in the area of the wound, but my whole being was being healed. I realised that I have to be patient with this process and allow it all the time it needs. It was helpful to remember the Rumi poem – a wound is an opening for the light to come in.

I struggled for three days, not so much physically, more emotionally. On Saturday when I got home, and did not feel like doing much, it was a blessing to be able to rest with my Reiki hands on me. The next day I could also rest on my Yoga mat in a Restorative Yoga pose. The tooth was released with ease, the physical wound was not too bad. So I was struggling to understand why I was not able to function, why I was feeling so low.

The third day, it felt as if something moved inside me. I realised that I was resisting letting go of numbness that has been held within me. I realised that I have been avoiding feeling pain. I remembered that I have to be willing to feel the pain to be able to feel the joy of being alive, the joy of being in the body. I was sitting cross legged in meditation, it felt as if my sitting bones yielded deeper into the floor.

The whole experience has been so deeply insightful and healing that I can actually feel grateful for losing a tooth!  Deep gratitude to the tooth that sacrificed itself to enable me to experience this healing. Gratitude to my spiritual practices that help and support me to accept what is, learn and heal from how life is unfolding. Deeply grateful to all the people who supported me in this healing process.

Another Rumi poem feels very apt at this time:
Sorrow prepares you for joy. It violently sweeps everything out of your house, so that new joy can find space to enter. It shakes the yellow leaves from the bough of your heart so that fresh, green leaves can grow in their place. It pulls up the rotten roots so that new roots hidden beneath have room to grow. Whatever sorrow shakes from your heart, far better things will take their place.

Desperation and Peace

I love learning in oral tradition. One of my favourite memories from childhood is my aunt visiting and telling us stories at bedtime. I am so grateful I found my way to Reiki taught in the oral tradition, in the spiritual lineage of Usui, Hayashi, Takata and Phyllis Lei Furumoto. This is the form of Reiki that I needed. There is something special for me about the spoken word. When I hear something, it can help move things deep inside me.

I know that I will not be able to stay with, or take in, each and every word that I hear. I have come to realise that it is not the words themselves but what the words are helping move within me that is more important. I have learnt to pay attention to what moves inside me. Sometimes I am aware of what is moving at the same time as I am listening. Sometimes the movement seems to happen at a subconscious level at the time and surfaces at a later date.

I listened to the Webinar – Living the Precepts – Reiki as a Way of Life. The next morning, after my Reiki self treatment, I remembered Phyllis Lei Furumoto talked about the desperation that people from Mexico must feel to want to leave their home to move to the US. I had read a book last year with a similar theme, The Year of the Runaways. This is about some men from India leaving home and in desperate search of a new life in the UK. I have not forgotten this book, and it kept surfacing in my consciousness ever since.

In that moment of rememberance, it seemed I needed to recognise the desperation in my own heart and tend to it. I felt that I do not have to understand what the desperation is about, I simply need to acknowledge it and own it. It felt like a physical ache in my heart. It felt as if tending to the desperation inside me will help me to accept the suffering, the seeming imperfections of the world. To me, acceptance of what is, seems to be a vital key to inner peace.

In that moment it felt as if through this realisation and recognition of the desperation within me, something moved and it will be easier to be at Home within myself, in my body and in the present moment.

There may be more layers that need to be peeled to live life in the present moment, in my body, at Home within myself. I trust that my daily spiritual practice of Reiki will help me recognise and work through these layers as they surface in my consciousness. It is a practice after all, a journey.

Spiced Hot Chocolate – healthy

I do not like drinking milk so I could never enjoy Hot Chocolate. But I love chocolate and the attraction has persisted. Last year I discovered turmeric Latte made with almond milk. It felt as if I was in heaven when I would have the time to make it with my own hands and savour drinking the cuppa.

With time, the attraction to Turmeric Latte waned. I know it sounds fickle. But wait for it, I was meant to go on to discover something even more delicious – Spiced Hot Chocolate. I tried Almond milk version of Hot chocolate. I loved it but missed the spices.

I decided to not listen to the strict inner voice telling me to keep the two drinks separate and pure. I tried adding raw cacao nibs to the turmeric latte recipe and loved the combination. To me it tastes divine. Last winter I felt that turmeric latte was my hot drink of the season. This year my vote goes to Spiced Hot Chocolate. You can try either of the two recipes, both are winners.

Turmeric Latte (makes one cup)

10 almonds soaked in water for at least 4 hours. I find it easier to let them soak overnight.

1 tsp powdered cinnamon

1 cm piece of fresh ginger

1 cm piece of fresh turmeric

1 green cardamom pods – skin discarded

1 date (you can use the sweetener of your choice. I prefer natural sweeteners like honey, maple syrup rather than sugar)

1/2 tsp ghee/coconut oil

2-4 black pepper corns

I prefer to peel the almonds, discard the skin and any discoloured almonds. I know that it sounds laborious and time consuming. But do try to make the time for this ritual. Slow down, peel them really slowly, mindfully and see how it makes you feel inside. I find slowing down helps me to synchronise my rhythm to the rhythm of the Earth, slows down my breath and helps me to feel more in my body and in the present moment. Slowing down has also helped me to do the household chores with acceptance, dare I say it with enjoyment even! So much so that I do not like to use the word chore anymore for household work. Perhaps this is helping me to start understanding the Zen practice of ‘chop wood and carry water’.

If you wish to make Spiced Hot Chocolate, just add 1 tbsp of raw cacao nibs to the blender.

The recipe is simple – put all the ingredients in a blender with 1 cup of hot boiling water. Blend, pour in a cup and enjoy the drink. Make time to sit down, hold the warm cup between your hands. Savour the warmth in this cold weather. Drink slowly.

You can vary the ingredients to suit your taste. The recipe is very flexible. For example, you can replace ginger and turmeric with powdered version, if you do not have them fresh. I prefer the fresh version as it not only tastes nicer, I trust it is more nutritious, and will be absorbed more easily by the body. All the ingredients are so healthy, they may also help keep the bugs away at this time of the year.

I make 2 – 4 cups at a time, with just 1 cup water and store the leftover in the refrigerator once it has cooled down. It lasts for up to 2 days. All I have to do is add hot boiling water and my drink is ready.

It was not easy for me to pause, stop drinking this delicious creation and take a photograph. But when the inspiration comes, I know that I have to do this, the thoughts, the words keep coming and time becomes available in my day, to sit down and create a blog post.

Struggling with forgetfulness!

I have lost my wallet twice in the last few years. So I started to store some extra cash in a zipped pocket in my handbag. I had put £100 in the pocket recently for a payment I had to make. I took out the money to make the payment, ended up not having to make the payment so I put the money back in my bag. I was a bit distracted so the money did not go back in that same pocket!

The next day I needed the money for another payment. I looked for the money in the pocket where I usually store it and I could not find it. Initial response was worry – have I lost the money! The next worrying thought was – do I have enough money in my wallet to make this payment! Fortunately I did, as I could not have paid with a card.

On the way home, I decided to stop off in the park, and sat on a bench under the trees. There I found the money but it was in another pocket in my bag!

In that moment it felt as if this is how life works. We are born with all that we need in this lifetime. In the growing up process we tend to forget about some of these abilities, or they might get hidden or misplaced. But they are still there inside each one of us.

When we need these abilities, we tend to think – I don’t have this ability or I don’t have enough. This probably changes to ‘I am not enough’. With time this belief turns into anxiety and can show up as ‘Will I be able to cope the next time I need this ability?’

In that moment I remembered a similar experience where being in nature, with Mother Earth, had helped me remember what I seemed to have forgotten.

Another trick I am finding helpful when I forget something, I try to welcome it as an opportunity to remember who I truly am. I feel this is being kind to myself and so much more helpful than berating myself for being forgetful or looking at it as a sign of aging or not being mindful!

If it is true that we are born with all that we need in this lifetime, surely a vital key to this remembrance is in our early years. Perhaps this is another reason why it seems so important to love and heal our inner child. Surely the child within can help us remember where the ability to laugh, to have fun, to express ourselves, to be at ease, to breathe comfortably may be hidden or how it got suppressed.

I feel so grateful for Reiki, my daily spiritual practice that helps me listen to the whispers of life and receive such insightful gifts from seemingly mundane events.

Giving a Reiki Treatment to an anxious mother-to-be this week, and meeting up with a dear friend, a mother, whom I found through this article I wrote for The Mother Magazine, a couple of years ago, reminded me to share this article with you – hoping more mothers may find something helpful here to alleviate the anxiety that can come with being pregnant and being a mother.

I wish that I had known some of this when I was going through the pregnancy phase of my life. I cannot turn the clock back for myself, but I can share what has been growing within me over the years, from the struggles I experienced.

Yoga in the park – London, Highbury Fields

Gentle, relaxing, slow moving Yoga session in Highbury Fields on Tuesday mornings 10:30 am – very grounding. Recommended especially for people who may not be used to doing Yoga but would like to benefit from it.

I am a Restorative Yoga teacher. This Yoga session is based on the Restorative Yoga Principle of being comfortable in a Yoga pose so that one can stay in the pose for deeper relaxation and release of stress and tension.

Date & Time: Tuesday mornings Aug & Sep 2017; 10:30 am to 11:30 am – weather permitting!

Location: the fenced area of Highbury Fields, at the corner of Baalbec Road and Highbury Place, opposite the Highbury Baptist Church, N5 1QL. If you stand with your back to the church, you will be able to see us in the fields on your Right.

Cost: First session is free. Subsequent sessions – pay what you can. Suggested amount £5 – £10.
I would like this to be an inclusive event for everyone.

Please dress warm. Bring a yoga mat, or a mat to lie on as we will be doing a lot of lying down – especially if you are not comfortable lying on the wet grass. A picnic mat works quite well.

Please have breakfast about 2 hours earlier – it is easier to practice Yoga when the tummy is not too full.

Struggling with Change!

I love receiving the same message from more than one source on the same day, it can feel quite magical!

Earlier in the week, I woke up one morning reflecting on Change - about how we may struggle with change. If change is what we want ie something new in our life, and it comes too slowly, we struggle with the discomfort of being able to manifest it. Sometimes change can come quite quickly, before we may be ready to receive it. And we may struggle to adapt to the new!

Perhaps the underlying layer to this is our relationship with Time. After all, this realm that we live in, the Relative realm as it is called in some cultures and traditions, is the realm of body, mind and Time. Perhaps we are in this realm to experience the limitations of body, mind and/or time. So why are we unkind to ourselves when we struggle, thinking I am not doing what I need to do, or that I am doing something wrong!. Perhaps one of the keys to being able to navigate these times of struggle with ease, is to accept what is happening with gratitude. It seems easier to know things at a conscious level. It seems much harder to integrate it at a deeper level, to feel it so that I can live it in everyday life – especially when I am going through some deep discomfort. Perhaps this is the difference between knowledge, which is easier to acquire, and wisdom. Wisdom seems to come from either within, or from the Source or through practice and experience.

Perhaps when change seems to come slowly, I am being given the time I need to prepare for and adapt to the new. I feel so grateful for my daily Reiki self treatment practice, which helps me connect with the inner self, and the Source to be able to receive the light, strength and wisdom I need to be able to navigate life with more ease.

Later that morning, going to the garden I saw a squirrel. It is quite unusual to spot a squirrel in my garden. It did not scurry away on seeing me but came quite close to me. I felt it was bringing me a message. And on looking up the animal wisdom, the message I got was:
‘One thing you can be certain of in an uncertain world is the inevitability of change. So be adaptable and come into harmony with the cycles of change.’

On a practical note, one of the things that came up in the morning reflection with Change, was the  need to manifest a replacement boiler before Winter, and it has been taking time to find the right solution. The Squirrel wisdom started with the phrase ‘Squirrel teaches you to plan ahead for the winter’.

Then it got even more interesting. Going on to check the emails, I discovered the meditation message for the day:
“It is wise to bend rather than to break. Those who change will get spiritual wisdom. Conversely, those who have wisdom will decide to change. Change is the first law of Nature. In fact, change is the mark of Time.”

This reinforces my belief that we are all really connected, much more than we can imagine. And not just with other people, but to all life forms. I did not used to feel this way. Feeling very grateful to the daily practice of Reiki which helps me see life this way.

Restorative Yoga – Testimonials

I am loving teaching Restorative Yoga. All that I am, all that I have been learning, doing over the years seems to flow through this practice as well. Even though I have started teaching Restorative Yoga recently, it does not feel new to me. It seems as if I have been teaching this for a long time.

I decided to train as a Restorative Yoga teacher because I love this practice so much, I have been attending a weekly class regularly for more than a year now. I have also been deepening my yoga practice with various workshops in the last few months. Then I decided to go on a Restorative Yoga retreat in 2016 to learn and receive more from this practice. Not realizing that the workshop was also to learn how to teach Restorative Yoga. After some encouragement from my wonderful Restorative Yoga teacher, I decided to train as a Restorative Yoga teacher to be able to share this wonderful practice with the people around me. I would like you to benefit from this wonderful practice, just as I have been benefiting from it – nourishing myself at all levels, physical, mental, emotional and spiritual.

I am so glad that I have started to teach Restorative Yoga. Teaching seems to be deepening and nourishing my own practice profoundly. I am loving teaching Restorative Yoga.

Inner and Outer beauty

It is not easy to feel beautiful in today’s world. All the subliminal messages we receive from the fashion industry and the media do not help. One of the messages being that we need to buy lots of beauty products to look beautiful. Truth is that beauty does not need to cost much. I have been using food products from the kitchen for my beauty routine, for many years now. I feel much more comfortable using food that I am willing to put inside my body, on my skin, rather than using a shop bought product from a jar.

About fifteen years ago, when I started noticing some lines around my eyes, I bought a jar of a very good quality eye cream. Needless to say it was quite expensive too. I got an infection on my eye lid soon after I started using it. My homeopath suggested using coconut oil to help clear the infection. The anti bacterial properties of the oil worked wonders. I liked using coconut oil so much that I have continued using it since then.

For moisturiser, I use coconut oil with a small amount of Rescue Remedy cream on my face. I use coconut oil on the rest of my body too. According to Ayurveda, Coconut oil is cooling, so I use it in warm weather. In cold weather I switch over to Sesame oil as it is warming.

For cleansing the face, I keep a mix of honey & ghee(clarified butter) in the bathroom. I add a little lemon juice or milk or yogurt or simply few drops of water to the mix to apply it on my face. I have an aloe vera plant near the bathroom. Sometimes I use the gel from a leaf too. I gently massage it in and wash it off in the shower.

For face mask, mashed banana or avocado works wonder for my skin which tends to be dry. For oily skin papaya can be very good.

Before I learnt Reiki, my hands used to be quite rough. I tried many different hand creams and nothing seemed to help. Then I remembered what my mother used to do when I was little – apply diluted Vegetable Glycerin on the hands. This seems to work the best and it is such an economical solution. I use either water for dilution and add a drop of Rose essential oil, or Rosewater. Glycerin is a preservative so plain water works very well too and the mix keeps for ages.

Another subliminal message being perpetuated by the fashion industry is to have a perfect body. I do not enjoy clothes shopping much as I come away feeling quite unhappy about my body. Is it just me or do most clothes in the shops these days seem to be designed for slim bodies! After a recent experience looking for a T Shirt that I could wear for practicing Yoga, that would not highlight all the imperfections in my body, I realised that I have a choice. I can either continue to feel shame about what I see as imperfections in my body. Or I can look for the gift in these seeming imperfections.

I know that my body is the home for my soul. So the body I have is perfect for what my soul needs to experience in this lifetime. As I learn to accept the body I have, I will be able to work with what my soul is longing for and feel good within myself. As I feel good about myself, I am at ease, I am relaxed. When I am at ease, it does not matter what I wear (within reason!). I feel beautiful from within and it reflects in my appearance.

Perhaps one aspect of beauty is the ability to see perfection in the seeming imperfections in my own body. I know that as I am able to see the beauty in all the seeming imperfections within me, it will help me to able to see the beauty in others too.

Feeling very grateful for my daily practice of Reiki and also for Soul Plan healing. These help me to be able to look more deeply at what is bothering me and work through it. I trust that these healing practices will help me to grow the ability to see beauty in myself, others and in life itself.

Also feeling very grateful to my mother from whom I learnt so much, especially for growing up with Ayurveda as a way of life.

What is Restorative Yoga

Restorative Yoga (RY), to me, seems to be effortless* Yoga. It is about being rather than doing. It is about resting in a Yoga pose comfortably, using props creatively to support individual needs for improved alignment and comfort so that one is able to rest in the pose for long enough to be able to relax more and more deeply with each breath and observe what is happening. Relaxation allows space to be created inside, wherever it is needed at that moment. This space allows the flows within to happen more optimally. And the breath starts to flow with more ease, nourishing the whole being, at every level that one needs.

RY helps us to be at ease in the pose so that one can be still for long enough to allow whatever is held within that no longer serves us, to surface and be released or alleviated. Through this process of relaxation and release, the natural state of wellbeing can be gradually restored.

To me, Restorative Yoga makes the Yoga Sutra – Sthira-sukham-asanam - more accessible. I interpret the word Sthira as stable and steady and Sukham as comfortable, even blissful. Restorative Yoga helps make Yoga poses more comfortable, so much so, that one can rest in a pose for longer periods of time to be able to experience and savour sweetness, nurturing and comfort. These qualities, with continued practice, are not just experienced on the Yoga mat but start to flow over to the rest of the life as well.

*There is effort required in setting up the pose but once one is in the pose, there is no effort required to be in the pose. One simply needs to rest and observe.

Looking to detox!

Spring has arrived. Nature is providing what we need to detox our body at this time of year.

It does not have to be expensive to detox. This may sound a bit crazy, but edible weeds can help. I do not even have to go far, I forage in my garden. I like the idea of eating weeds and hope to grow resilient like them. I also like the idea of making use of what grows effortlessly and is actually considered useless. It truly feels like a gift from Mother Earth.

I made a smoothie this morning with some edible weeds – Dandelion leaves, Herb Robert (the weed that has small pink flowers later in the year), Parsley. I added some Magnolia petals too, yes they are edible. With one banana and some almonds (soaked overnight) blended together ,I had a delicious breakfast.

Picking the weeds for breakfast feels rather enjoyable. It gives me a reason to spend some time outdoors and connect with Mother Earth. Another way to ground my energy first thing in the morning!

The weeds I pick from the roots, I enjoy saying goodbye to them. It feels like an interesting ritual to help with letting go of what does not serve me anymore!

Sitting down to drink the smoothie mindfully, with my feet firmly planted on the floor and the sitting bones on the chair, it feels like I am plugged into the Earth energy and supported by her.

Loving this way to start my day.

Today, like every other day, we wake up empty and frightened.

Reiki class in April 2017

Have you been thinking of learning Reiki for a while?

This may be a really good time to listen to the inner prompt.

I draw a lot of inspiration from nature. Observing what is happening around me at this time of the year has been fascinating so far. I have seen bees amongst crocuses and butterflies in mid March! It feels different. I don’t remember seeing them so early in the year. The crocuses and the daffodils do not appear at the same time every year. I know that one could say ‘Global Warming’. But it is how it is and I feel there is a gift in this. Perhaps it is the Universe facilitating the energy of us waking upto our beingness, helping us remember who we truly are. And Nature is so much about beingness. The plants do not get caught up in the doing mode like we, human beings can.

I feel that true strength comes from our beingness. The society values the doing culture. So it is easy to get caught up in the doing mode and push ourselves to do more and more. If something is not working in life, it is so easy to start wondering about ‘What do I need to do?’, ‘What am I not doing’ or ‘What am I doing wrong?’ etc. etc….

What is increasingly becoming clearer to me is that if I push myself into doing mode, I am running on empty and it can lead to stress and exhaustion. On the other hand, if I am able to connect with my beingness, and nurture it, transformation can start to happen from within and my roots ie. my foundation gets stronger. What is happening in my outer life is perhaps a reflection of what is happening inside me. As my inner world changes, the outer world will also start to fall into place. If a tree has strong roots, it is better able to nourish itself and is therefore more likely to grow taller and stronger.

One of the ways to nurture my beingness is to allow some time for myself to simply be – and do nothing if this is what I feel like, simply gaze out of the window, sit under a tree, admire beautiful spring blossoms at this time of the year. It is essential to trust in this process and not feel guilty about spending time when nothing much seems to be happening. When nothing much seems to be happening on the surface, a lot may be happening on the inside, but it may not be visible or perceptible.

In being mode – a lot can be transformed. Just as what seems like waste products can be transformed to fertiliser by Mother Earth, to nourish new growth; what may seem like a weakness can be transformed to strength when I am able to allow myself to simply be. Rather than feeling cross with myself for being forgetful, I am enjoying welcoming each instance of forgetfulness as another opportunity to remember who I truly am.

Learning Reiki enables the Reiki student to give themselves a Reiki treatment everyday. Giving oneself a Reiki treatment is a wonderful way to nurture beingness. Being able to trust that inner transformation is happening during this time of connection with the deeply nourishing Universal Life Force Energy ie Reiki, can be very helpful to motivate oneself to continue with the daily practice of Reiki self treatment – one of the key ingredients of Reiki practice.

Daily Reiki self treatments have been helping strengthen my roots, nourishing my beingness since I learnt Reiki in 2001. If you would like to nourish your beingness with daily Reiki self treatment, and would like to learn Reiki with me, the next Reiki level One class dates are April 20 – 23, 2017.

Each Reiki Class seems to have a focus, a theme. The next Reiki Class in April seems to be focussed on waking upto our true beingness.
