In very warm weather, I find water melon helps me to be able to cope with the heat. It satisfies my thirst in a way that water does not on very hot days. So I could not resist buying a watermelon as I was walking home one evening, even though I still had a 15 – 20 minutes walk ahead. As I got tired from carrying the weight of the watermelon I started to think of getting home and being free of carrying the watermelon.  I realised in that moment that I was not enjoying the walk like I usually do. I became conscious of focusing on the destination and not enjoying the journey because of the weight I was carrying.

I remembered a quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson “Life is a journey, not a destination”. There is a Chinese Proverb with a similar message “It is not the destination that is important, but the journey there”.

I felt that when I am not able to enjoy life, one reason is because of the weight of the burdens I am carrying. This weight can come from many different sources. Some of it could be due to the stress and the wounds I have encountered through life that I am still carrying. Some of it could be my misperceptions about what is happening in my life.

This realisation helped me feel really grateful for my daily Reiki practice as I know that Reiki helps me to let go of what is presenting in the outer layer of my being each time I give myself a Reiki treatment. When I receive a Reiki treatment from another person, I know that the healing can go even deeper.

Reiki heals at all the levels I need – physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. Reiki heals in many different ways, way beyond what I can imagine. Letting go of what I do not need to continue to carry is one of the benefits I receive.

Another aspect of Reiki healing I love is its simplicity. I just do the daily practice and trust that I receive what I need in that moment.

So enjoying life seems to be one way of gauging how I am doing with letting go of the burdens I am carrying. Another way to get a feel of how I am with letting go on a regular basis is the daily bowel movement. I know that it is not a pretty thing to talk about. But it is very important. If my body is not able to let go of the waste in the intestines efficiently, it can lead to all kinds of imbalances and disease.

In addition to exercise and movement, I find giving attention to the body at a subtle level can be very helpful. Breathing into the lower body, right down to the pelvic floor helps. Talking to the body, simply asking the belly and the intestines ‘What do you need’ can also help. I feel that it is good to simply ask the question and not be too focused on getting an answer right away. The answer comes in its own time.

Another very helpful thing I have discovered for letting go is the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra. This Mantra is about letting go. More importantly it is about letting go with Grace and ease. Just as easily as a ripe fruit comes off a branch or the vine. It is recommended to listen/chant a mantra 108 times. This is a long mantra, so chanting it 108 times is not easy. There is healing to be received from chanting it 3 or 9 or 11 times too.

Please do share what you find helpful to let go of what is not needed anymore.
